A 4 week new product development sprint with Diabetes UK to design a new information-based service for younger groups of people with type 2 diabetes.

Challenge

We now have evidence that shows that some people recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes can put their diabetes into remission via weight loss interventions. To make type 2 remission a possibility for as many people as possible, Diabetes UK wanted to create a service that: a) raises awareness of different approaches to put type 2 diabetes into remission b) provides appropriate content to help people to make a choice about their route to remission and c) supports people before, during and after their remission intervention.

They were particularly keen to build a service that complemented any NHS offer, catered for people from lower socio-economic or ethnic minority backgrounds and those of working age, who may be less likely to use their current informational support but more likely to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

Solution

We co-created a design for a new service with our target audience (name to be revealed) which offers an easy new way to receive your own personalised advice, resources and routes to remission based on what’s right for you.

This new digital service will provide not only personalised content and education but also emotional and peer support as you try one or more remission approaches, with support continuing for as long as needed.

Impact

  • Diabetes UK developed a deeper understanding of groups they don’t typically engage with, their experience of diagnosis and their wants and needs from a service of this kind

  • Once launched the service could support the significant number of people in the UK living with type 2 diabetes

  • And, be there for the estimated 850,000 who are currently living with type 2 diabetes but are yet to be diagnosed
